Britain in Talks to Join Europe's New Air Defence System

Grant Shapps Confirms UK's Involvement in Sky Shield Plan

Grant Shapps has confirmed that Britain is in talks to join Europe's new air defence system. The UK is collaborating with EU allies to determine the details of what a Sky Shield may entail. This plan could potentially involve the deployment of missiles such as US Patriots, Israeli Arrow-3s, and German IRIS-Ts on UK soil to safeguard against hostile projectiles, including drones.

Proposal Originating from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

The initiative for the Europe Sky Shield was proposed by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in response to Vladimir Putin's missile attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure in 2022. Currently, 21 nations are engaged in these discussions, with even neutral Switzerland participating in the talks.

UK Defence Budget Increase and Future Plans

Grant Shapps also addressed the recently pledged £75 billion increase in the defence budget until 2030. He mentioned that more details on how this budget will be utilized will be revealed soon, hinting at his upcoming role as a shipbuilding czar. When asked about the adequacy of the UK's Armed Forces, Shapps expressed the need for more action, emphasizing that the country cannot rely solely on past peace dividends and should be prepared for potential conflicts.
